The Houston Zoo
While we were in Katy, TX, we had a day to spare doing whatever we wanted before we left for Rockport, TX. (A 3 hour drive from Katy) My lil cousin Madi wasn't going to be coming on the trip to Rockport so Ricky and I decided to take her to the zoo. A harmless trip, we thought. But it ended up being a crazy day! I'll give y'all some tips to avoid some of the problems we encountered on this lovely day too ;)
Since Ricky and I are from the biggest little city in the world, have no idea how to navigate around Houston, or any large city for that matter! We turned to google maps for directions, bought a paper map for backup and quickly realized we made a mistake.. One thing we have never encountered before was tollways on highways, and let me tell you they are TRAPS! Once you get on a tollway road, theres no getting off for a while because the walls swallow you in, and there are only exits every so often. So, we ended up getting a few $30 fines. Woooohooo! So if you're from a small town like us, and you want to get directions from google maps on your phone, go into your settings and click on Avoid Tollways.
It'll save your wallet. 💸 And your time!
FUN FACT! Katy freeway is one of the largest freeways in the world (it might actually be the largest) with 26 lanes across.
Once we made it to the Houston Zoo (Finally!!) we got our tickets and wristbands and went on in. One thing about Texas is that it is so extremely humid that its hard to spend a good amount of time outside, unless you're used to it. At the zoo, they had a bunch of chill zones and indoor exhibits so that you can cool off, it was so awesome!! The zoo itself was beautiful and so BIG!!
The monkeys and giraffes were by far our favorite 😍 I was able to feed a giraffe!! Zoos can sometimes get boring because the animals just sleep or hide all day, but the monkeys were jumping around everywhere and we could actually watch their behavior. They were so cuteeee!! The gorillas were Ricky's favorite, because he loves gorillas, his favorite music artist is even Gorillaz. Haha! (He even kinda looks like one ;) We watched one gorilla eat his own 💩 and it was so gross, everyone at the exhibit was gagging. 🤢 On the other hand our lunch was really delicious! 😂 We ate at the Twiga cafe and I got the spicy southwest chicken sandwich. It was really similar to a Chik-Fil-A chicken sandwich, therefore it was amazing! 😋
Okay so for this next part of the story, keep in mind that when we arrived at the zoo it was sunny out and a perfect day for the zoo. Every time I visit a zoo, I always get a pressed penny with my favorite zoo animal on it. (A tradition from when I was a kid.) So I decided Madi and I could both get one and it would be cute and she could carry on the tradition too! As we were standing at the penny machine, we heard a thunder crack and then seconds afterwards it started to downpour! It started flooding everywhere and we hid underneath a roof over a wishing fountain. We had to find better shelter and I was protecting my camera with my life!! We ran to a cabana with picnic tables and waited there for the storm to pass. The rain just kept pouring down so we decided to just head home. We stopped at a gift shop and wrapped my camera completely with a plastic bag so it didn't get wet. So another tip, always prepare for rain and bring umbrellas, plastic and raincoats!
Hang tight for more Texas adventures coming soon!! ✨💜
